Surf Fundamentals

Loading image:

Whether you’re stepping on a board for the first time or refining your technique, mastering the basics is key to enjoying your time in the water. Surfing combines balance, timing, and ocean awareness, and understanding these fundamentals will help you progress faster and stay safe.

1. Reading the Ocean:

Before paddling out, spend time observing the lineup. Look for where waves are breaking, identify rip currents, and watch how other surfers position themselves. Knowing how the ocean moves helps you find the best spot to catch waves and avoid hazards.

2. Paddling & Positioning:

Efficient paddling is essential for catching waves. Keep your body centered on the board, chest slightly lifted, and use long, steady strokes. Position yourself so the nose of your board is just above the water’s surface.

3. Pop-Up Technique:

The pop-up is the movement that takes you from lying down to standing on your board. Practice on land by pushing up with your hands under your chest, then bringing your feet underneath you in one smooth motion. Your stance should be shoulder-width apart with knees bent and eyes forward.

4. Balance & Stance:

A low, centered stance keeps you stable. Bend your knees, keep your arms loose for balance, and look in the direction you want to go. Remember: your eyes lead your body.

5. Surf Etiquette:

Respect in the lineup is just as important as skill. Always follow right-of-way rules, don’t drop in on another surfer’s wave, and be mindful of beginners and swimmers nearby.

Mastering these core elements will give you the confidence to progress safely while having fun. Once you’ve nailed the basics, you’ll be ready to learn advanced maneuvers and start carving your own style on the waves.
