How to Install Futures Fins: Step-by-Step Guide
Apr 15, 2026
Futures fins use a single-screw box system that’s been the standard on performance shortboards for years. Installing them right takes about 60 seconds per fin once you know the motion. Watch the video below, then follow the written steps if you want to double-check your technique.
What you’ll need
- Your Futures fins (tri-fin, quad, or twin — whatever setup your board is rigged for)
- The Futures fin key (comes with every set of fins — 3/32" hex driver)
- A towel to keep the deck dry while you work
Step-by-step
1. Loosen the set screw.
Use the fin key to back the grub screw out a few turns. You don’t need to remove it all the way — just enough that the fin tab clears it.
2. Check fin orientation.
Futures fins are side-specific on tri-fins. The rake (curve) sweeps back toward the tail. Your center fin is symmetrical and can go either way.
3. Slide the front tab in first.
Angle the fin forward and slot the front tab into the leading edge of the box. Press the back of the fin down into the box until it seats flush with the board.
4. Snug the set screw.
Tighten until the fin stops wiggling. Don’t crank on it — overtightening strips the screw and can damage the box. Firm is enough.
5. Repeat for each fin. Rails first, center fin last.
Common mistakes
- Fin won’t seat flush — the back tab is probably catching. Lift the fin slightly and push the nose of the fin fully forward before seating the back down.
- Wrong fin on wrong side — the logo on the side fin should face outward. If the rake points forward, it’s on the wrong rail.
- Stripped set screw — stop tightening the moment the fin locks up. A stripped screw means a trip to the shop.
After you surf
Rinse the fin boxes with fresh water before storing, especially if you surfed in the sand. Grit works its way into the set screw threads and is the #1 reason screws strip over time. A quick fresh rinse and occasional dab of wax on the threads keeps everything moving cleanly.
