East Coast surf changes by the hour. On small, mushy days you need a board with extra volume and a flatter rocker to keep you moving. The Wasabi and Kai Fish are built for exactly that. When the swell picks up and the waves get steep, reach for a shortboard like the Bullet or Slingshot that can handle speed and vertical turns. Most East Coast surfers get the most mileage out of a fish or groveler paired with a step-up shortboard for bigger days.
New surfers should start on a soft top like the Plantain or Papaya, then graduate to a wider hybrid like the Oyster Catcher or Everyday. Intermediate riders ready for more maneuverability move into a fish or mid-length. Advanced surfers dial in their quiver with a performance shortboard and a small-wave groveler. Not sure where you fall? Visit our Wildwood shop and we will match a board to your height, weight, and local break.
Every Kona surfboard is shaped and glassed in Wildwood, New Jersey. The shapers surf the same East Coast breaks you do, so the outlines, rockers, and volumes are tuned for local conditions rather than imported from California or overseas factories.
Kona offers most models in both EPS/epoxy (Truelite construction) and traditional PU/polyester. EPS boards are lighter, more responsive, and more durable. PU boards have a classic flex feel that many surfers prefer once they start linking turns. Both are shaped from the same templates, so the outlines are identical.
Beginners should start on a soft top for safety and stability. Once you are catching waves consistently, move to a wider hybrid like the Oyster Catcher or Everyday. Intermediate surfers ready for more performance should look at the Kai Fish or Wasabi. Advanced riders will find what they need in the Bullet or Slingshot shortboard lineup.
Yes. Kona shapes custom boards in-house. You pick the model, dimensions, and construction. Custom orders typically take 4-6 weeks depending on the queue. Talk to the team at our Wildwood shop or call to start a custom order.
Board size depends on your weight, fitness level, and the waves you ride. As a general rule, beginners should add 12-18 inches to their height for board length and aim for high volume. Intermediate surfers can drop closer to their height with moderate volume. Use the size guides on individual model pages or ask our staff for a recommendation based on your specifics.
